How the Portal assigns default graduation plans

Learn about how grad plans are set and updated (NY high schools only)

Updated over a week ago

Hello 🙂

The Portal assigns a default graduation plan to each student. The plan consists of two parts:

  • A planned diploma type or credential (e.g. Advanced Regents diploma or Regents diploma)

  • A planned graduation date (e.g. June 2026 or Jan 2027)

The default plan is meant to be a starting point for tracking progress, but we encourage you to adjust as you see fit to reflect the best-case outcome for each student.

Why is grad planning important?

1. Shared Vision

The Portal ensures all staff members—from counselors and teachers to administrators—are on the same page about a student's academic goals. By setting a clear graduation plan, everyone is unified in guiding the student toward their best-case outcome.

2. Real-Time Progress Monitoring

The Portal provides real-time progress tracking tailored to each student's specific graduation plan. This means you can easily see if they're on track to meet the requirements for their specific diploma—whether it’s an Advanced Regents or a Local.

3. Graduation Forecasting

For your senior class, the Portal provides a valuable forecast of your planned graduation rate. This high-level view of possible outcomes enables you to intervene with targeted resources before it's too late.

Logic for assigning default plans

Our application automatically assigns a default graduation plan for each student, which can be adjusted at any time in the Portal. Below is a summary of our general logic, but we are happy to provide additional detail as needed.

For Traditional High School Students: We set the planned diploma type to Regents for general education students and Local for Safety Net-eligible students*, including all SWD students. The graduation date is defaulted to June of the student's cohort year.

For Transfer High School Students: The planned diploma type is set to Regents for general education students and Local for Safety Net-eligible students*, including all SWD students. The planned graduation date, however, is assigned based on the number of credits a student has earned and the number of terms they will need to meet all remaining credit requirements.

*Safety-Net eligibility is imported from your source system but can also be updated directly in the Portal.

How you can adjust plans

You can adjust plans at any point from the Graduation Panel in the Student Profile, or using batch actions Plans > Edit graduation plan in the Data Grid (Graduation Planning Portal view).
