What does the "ML" field mean?

Multilingual Learners (ML) fields have been added throughout the Portal to align with official ML designations. This allows educators to easily hone in on these student groups to provide specific support as needed.

ML Categories

  • Yes, to indicate that the student is a current Multilingual Learner, as seen in the most recent data from the student information system

  • No, to indicate that the student is not a current Multilingual Learner, as seen in the most recent data from the student information system

ELL Status (English Language Learner)

  • Current ELL - Student has not met criteria for exiting ELL status and is entitled to support. They are required to take NYSESLAT in the spring.

  • Former ELL - Student has met the criteria to exit Current ELL status and are entitled to supplemental support for 2 years.

  • Ever ELL - Student has completed 2 years of school under Former ELL status, and is no longer entitled to supplemental support.

  • Never ELL - Student’s home language is English and has never been classified as an ELL.
